Location and Climate
Objectives
- Create a clay vessel using the coil building technique
- Make predictions, experiment, and anticipate possible outcomes based on the properties of clay in various stages
- Explore some ceramic artworks from ancient history
- Understand the purposes of clay in ancient cultures including Saudi Arabia
Ceramic Coil Building
Students build a clay vessel using the coil building
technique in the shape of their choice. They may also create a handle and
decorations for their pot.
Coil Snails
The first year I taught grade 2 the students were new to ceramics so we started with pinch pots. The students were given the choice to create fish or monsters.

Heroes

Outcomes
- Identify, plan and make specific choices of materials tools and processes
- Sharpen powers of observation
- Use appropriate terminology to discuss artwork (portrait, collage and elements of art)
Students use the techniques of collage and photo transfer to create a portrait of a hero. They use textured papers in their work.


Communication Through Signs & Symbols
Objectives
- Investigate the practices of abstract artists
- Identify, plan and make choices of painting materials, tools and processes
- Work collaboratively and individually
- Identify colour and shape as formal elements of art
Abstract resist paintings (2019)
Students explore the symbolic power of colour and shape
using resist painting techniques. They choose colours to represent how they
feel while investigating contrasts of colour and value. The triangle shapes are
inspired by the triangular cuttings made into traditional Saudi architecture.


Expression Through Culture
Objectives
- Consider their audience when creating work
- Communicate their ideas, feelings and experiences through their work
- Become an engaged and responsive audience for a variety of art forms
- Understand that there is a relationship between the artist and the audience
African Inspired Masks
Students create their own unique mask,
inspired by African designs, using card stock paper. They select a purpose for
the mask and consider their audience.

Papier Mâché Animals (2018)
Students will create papier mâché animals using recycled
materials. By reusing materials they demonstrate their responsibility
towards nature, a responsibility also reflected in the animals they choose to
create.
Art of Construction
Jumping frog
Students will learn the Japanese Art of Origami to create a
jumping frog. The principles of origami are also used in a number of
engineering applications. For example, Origami is a source of inspiration for
mechanical engineers when designing mechanisms for use in space.
