Drawing: Art History Series

Developing new ways of seeing enables us to better understand
and represent the world in which we live

Factual
What elements of art do we need to learn/refine to improve our drawing?

Conceptual
Could our broader understanding of the world be impacted by our previous knowledge? If so, what
are ways in which we can change the way we "see" the world to broaden our perspective.

Debatable
Is it possible to learn how to draw or do you need to have talent?

Composite Drawing (2017)
These formative drawings focus on composition and understanding of the picture plane through
positive and negative space. Students draw a silhouette of two combined objects, creating a
composite shape. Objects should overlap in one or more areas. Finally, they use charcoal to fill either the positive or negative space.

Art History Drawings: Summative Project
Students select a work from Art History based on their own personal interests. To start they make a series of drawings with the work. They should transform the work to change the form, composition, space etc.

Ceramic Platters (2017)
In this unit students use a slab building technique to create a large platter. They add texture then suspend the slab in a cloth to create form. Students study ceramics as an art form embedded in human history. They investigate how different cultures and eras have created techniques to utilize naturally occurring materials to fulfill both functional and aesthetic purposes.

This group was new to ceramics so I developed this project so that the girls could produce something to be proud of, while gaining experience with basic techniques. They must have been proud of their work as they gifted their favourite one to a much loved math teacher.
